Brouwer Kesmac: A local legacy with a global impact on the Town of Georgina

Town of Georgina Council and staff with Brouwer family and staff

Over the past five decades, Brouwer Kesmac has grown from a modest operation into a global leader in turf equipment manufacturing. What began as a sod farm in the 60s and then a separate harvester manufacturing business in 1972, has blossomed into a company known worldwide for its innovation in turf harvesting technology. Beyond its industry-leading breakthroughs and international recognition, Brouwer Kesmac remains deeply rooted in the community of Georgina, where it all began.

A legacy of innovation

Since its early days, Brouwer Kesmac has been a pioneer in the turf equipment industry. In the 1970s, when sod was still harvested manually, Gerry Brouwer’s innovative spirit led to the development of a tractor-mounted sod harvester that revolutionized the industry. Today, it  offers 19 different products catering to a diverse range of clients – from small farms to large commercial operations. Over the last five decades, Brouwer Kesmac harvesters have cut trillions of rolls and slabs around the world, cementing the Brouwer legacy and becoming recognized as the most used sod harvesters in the industry.

Automation has become the backbone of Brouwer Kesmac’s operations. Harvesters today can cut the turf, roll or slab it and stack it on pallets all with a single operator, producing a full pallet of sod every couple of minutes. The company’s technological advancements increase efficiency and safety for its customers, appealing advantages that continue to make Brouwer Kesmac a leader in the field.

Economic impact on Georgina

Brouwer Kesmac’s economic contributions to Georgina are profound. The company has expanded three times since its inception, now utilizing more than 100,000 square feet of space for manufacturing and operations. This growth has created steady employment opportunities for local residents, injecting vitality into the local economy and making Brouwer Kesmac one of the most significant employers in the area.

Though less than 15 per cent of its business is within Canada, much of it in the Golden Horseshoe area and Quebec, the company’s global reach is undeniable. Brouwer Kesmac’s equipment is sold worldwide, from North America and Europe to Asia and beyond, putting Georgina on the map. Despite the international success, the company remains loyal to its roots, continuously investing in the Town and supporting local businesses, events, and charitable causes.

The people behind the machines

One of the driving forces behind Brouwer Kesmac's success is its talented and dedicated team. With more than 65 employees, the company has created a family-like atmosphere where loyalty and long-term commitment are the norms. Many staff members have been with the company for more than 20 years, contributing their experience and passion to the company's continued growth.

These individuals – many of whom call Georgina home – are a testament to the company’s dedication to its workforce and its community.

Contributions to the community

The Brouwer family is as much a part of Georgina’s story as Georgina is part of theirs. From humble beginnings on the Brouwer Sod Farm, the family has continued to grow their turf business while contributing to the local community in countless ways. Whether it’s through supporting local events or employing local residents, Brouwer Kesmac has been a pillar in the Town’s economic and social fabric.

Its presence in Georgina is more than just business – it’s personal. As the company continues to grow and evolve, it remains deeply committed to the community that has supported it through the years.
